Cicada Alert
A Continuing Section by Jimmy Cooper

James will keep us updated from now until the end of the Summer with a new continuing section on a..pesty situation. Oh I am too much.

May 30, 2004I'm Curious, You Said They Were Out, But Where Are They?

Good question, right now you are probably wondering why Cicadas are in some places but not others. Some areas (mostly north, could be reason for lack of sighting at five fold) the ground might not of getting warm enough (64 degrees F) where the cicadas are under ground. Also, in many areas where the ground has been disturbed in the past 17 years (e.g., new neighborhoods, construction sights, you get the idea) there will not be cicadas. Also, areas with no trees (some cicadas might use a house instead of a tree which could work) since the cicadas will not be able to get up to the ground. So if you live in an old neighborhood, feel luck if you do not have any cicadas up yet, because they should be coming soon. This has been delayed in geting out to you, my loyal fans.

May 24, 2004<>Noises
br> Take a step outside and you will probably he a something like a buzzing sound in the background. In some areas it is louder than others but most in most areas you should be able to hear it. They sounds are from the male Ciccadas.

What Dead Cicadas Look Like

May 12, 2004
The Invasion Has Begun

The cicadas have begun to come out of the ground. You still will not notice them much for a couple of day now due to the fact that animals are eating them. The animals will stop eating them in a couple of days due to indigestion. You can eat the cicadas (yes, I think they are Kosher) and are "the other white meat". So this weekend, sit by the campfire and put a cicada on a stick and roost it over the fire while you hear the rest of its friends flying and bumping into you. The invasion has begun. It could be so bad in some parts as 1.5 millions cicada pests per square acre.

Holey Moley

There are already holes forming in the ground for the cicadas. They are very noticable. The swarm is going to come out starting mothers day and mostly out by five fold weekend.

Noisy Buggers

You could compare the noise of the Cicada to the sound of a lawn mower or a chain saw. They are that loud. Remember that they are terrible flyers and will bump into you a lot.

The Time has Come

Today is the beginning of the Cicada season. You might not see them yet, but know that they will be here very soon.

Information on Cicadas

Here are some facts on the Cicada. It is a insect with wings 1 to 2 inches long. It has short antenas which are feelers and long legs. They are best know for the song of the males (yes, it is annoying). To make the song they use a 2 drumlike portions of their body (yes, drum sounds are annoying). Periodical cicadas are the ones coming. They have dark skin. The cicadas develop for 17 years underground and come up every 17 years to mate. If anyone got confused in my last posting, a brood is a group of young cicadas. Loctous is the common name for the Cicadas. The scientific name is complicated, so here is some of it. The order is Hemiptera. The family is Cicadidae. The genus is Tibicen. And the species is Cicada. This is just some general information about Cicadas and more alerts will be out when they come so stay posted.

Cicada's How Bad Will They Be

When early may comes around every 17 years in this area, cicadas begin to appear in early May. They are just annoying things flying around. You probably know them as locus. This year is Brood X. In this Brood X there are many types of cicadas, one of them is the largest species of cicada. They are annoying and are the size of a big bug. They have their mating call which you can hear all day and night. It is a loud noise. There will be hundreds millions of the cicadas coming next month. They have even started to appear. Justin Blaufeld has seen one and called it annoying, and it was only one, think how annoying it would be with millions around. They are so bad in some areas you will need to put your windshield wipers on in your car since there would be so many dead ones on your windshield. Their life span is 2 to 6 weeks so wait till mid to late June for them all to go away. Once they come out, cancel everything you have outside, since you won't be able to have it. I am James Cooper and stay tuned to the Brunion for all your latest updates on the Cicada Alert.
